The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team is likely crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
