Teacher Killed and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Firefight at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Armed assailants have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a educational institution for young women in north-western Nigeria, police reports indicate.
The gang of attackers stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.
The assailants "engaged police personnel on duty in a gun duel" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their dormitory, an official report indicated.
An educational worker was lost their life while safeguarding the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now being treated medically.
Witnesses reported a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to generate terror.
Community members told reporters that the armed men then led a contingent of young women into surrounding rural areas.
The authorities announced they had sent "extra specialized police forces, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.
