Minecraft's Mayhem Mounts Update Brings Forth a Beautifully Chaotic Fresh Weapon to the Game
The seasonal content update for the block-building phenomenon has landed β and it brings with it the first new weapon introduced into the game since the mace made its debut. The lance is finally here and it could very well change how you play Minecraft, especially if you thrive on pandemonium.
An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides
The Mayhem Mounts update also incorporates several new features and enhancements centered around animal mounts in the game. That driving concept made the spear the natural choice for this release, as the creators had long felt it was the moment to introduce a fresh combat tool.
"We knew initially that we aimed for a fresh armament that would increase combat distance, and we wanted it to be mounted combat," noted a senior product manager. "We prototyped a few different ideas, but the spear was the one that both felt great when we ran our trials and also looked good for the use case."
If you're asking yourself whether fighting from a saddle means you can joust against your friends on horseback, the answer is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an offensive action excellently designed for it.
"Mounted lance combat] is one of the biggest use cases for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the lead adds. "The spear has a dual attack system: You have the jab attack, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you couch your lance and inflict greater injury [with] the more pace you have. So [itβs] ideal for jousting on horses."
Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration
The unruly pleasure isn't limited to there, though. If you're far enough into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an even more ridiculous idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] excellent for equipping the wings and going out and creating genuine chaos," she suggests.
In other words: Aerial lance combat is now a reality, and it needs to become an competitive event immediately.
Another key feature in this fresh content is the underwater mount. This sea-dwelling mob, which is inspired by the nautilus shells found in-game for years, can be tamed and mounted for underwater travel. Not only will it transport you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also preserve your breath meter, so there's no need to surface for a breath.
The other inclusions are largely things that are out to get you, as is the tradition of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a undead nautilus popping up in the water, often with a Drowned on its back. If you manage to defeat the Drowned, though, you can tame the undead mount β or the regular one, for that matter β with a spiky fish.
"We've been thinking about this issue for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the ideal opportunity to also unveil something for aquatic environments," the lead clarifies. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a several proposals for sea mounts that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked impressive, and we have the tie-in to the Nautilus shell that was pre-existing in the game."
She also adds that there are actually a pair of variants of undead nautilus: standard and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you encounter underwater."
Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks
Additional features include the sun-proof skeletons, desert-exclusive undead archers that can survive in the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you venture in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. Camel husks have an striking appearance that sees their bones protruding. The applies equally to undead steeds, who have a comparable exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a lance-wielding undead rider on their back.
The final pair of items on the drop's list are smaller gameplay updates, including some highly requested tweaks to equestrian travel. Now, you can cross waterways while atop a horse. Also, netherite horse armor is now available at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the ultimate protection it is worthy of.
A Spicy Send-Off for the Year
All told, the last content update of the year is a pretty good one. The spear by itself β and the pandemonium it invites β would have seemed like a major improvement. Throw in the Nautilus, and additional creatures seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.
The Mayhem Mounts update is available for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
