Trans documentarian Sam Feder's latest feature "Increased Examination" offers a compelling two-part viewpoint – both an intimate profile of a key transgender advocate and a critical analysis of media coverage about transgender existence.

Legal Battle at the Highest Court

This feature follows ACLU attorney Chase Strangio as he gears up for legal presentations in the significant Supreme Court case US v Skirmetti. These arguments occurred in December 2024, with the judiciary eventually ruling in favor of Tennessee's position, effectively permitting limitations on healthcare for trans young people to remain in place across numerous US states.

We made Heightened Scrutiny in only 16 months, shared Feder during a discussion. Meanwhile, my earlier film Disclosure took me five years, so this was quite rushed. Our purpose was to generate dialogue so people would know more about the case.

Human Narrative Amid Legal Struggle

Although Feder presents a comprehensive critique of how major media outlets have promoted transphobic rhetoric, the film's greatest achievement may be its captivating depiction of Strangio. Normally a cautious attorney in public appearances, Strangio displays his vulnerability throughout the production.

That was a major challenge, to share parts of my life to a filmmaker that I had worked hard to keep confidential, explained Strangio. Sam told me he wanted future generations to know that we tried, to see what was done in service of these struggles for our fundamental rights.

Varied Voices in the Movement

To support Strangio's story, Feder includes numerous trans activists, including well-known figures from media and entertainment. The documentary also presents viewpoints from non-trans allies who examine how mainstream media outlets have added to negative portrayals of transgender people.

The viewpoint of trans minors key to the court battle is shown through a remarkable young student named Mila. Audiences first see her speaking out for her peers at a school board meeting, with later scenes showing her speaking for trans rights outside the Supreme Court.

Personal Scenes Beyond the Courtroom

Heightened Scrutiny also features touching moments where Feder moves beyond the constant legal battle, including sequences of Strangio vacationing in Italy and getting a body art featuring verses from civil rights leader Pauli Murray's poem "Prophecy."

This ink sequence is one of my preferred parts in the movie, shared Strangio. Being tattooed is nearly like a contemplative experience for me, to be totally engaged in my body and to consider it as a container for things that are important to me.

Physical Autonomy and Portrayal

Feder's dedication to carefully capturing Strangio adding to his body art underscores that this film is essentially about trans bodies – not only those of young people who experience prohibition of their right to live genuinely in their own bodies, but also the bodies of the various participants who appear in the film.

I create films with a meaning, and part of that is selecting people who are outstanding and articulate enough to carry the camera, shared Feder. Whenever people ask me what they should wear for an filming, my answer is whatever makes you feel hot. This is crucial to me – as transgender individuals, we face challenges so much with our image.

Legacy and Optimism

A key aspect that causes Feder's documentaries stand out is his evident ability for making his transgender subjects feel at ease, seen and valued. This technique fosters genuine rapport between Feder and Strangio, enabling the director to accomplish his objective of showing Strangio as a whole person and leaving a document for coming generations of how resiliently he and others have campaigned for trans rights.

I hope not people to end up in a state of perpetual despair because of what the law is denying us, stated Strangio. I aim to be in a practice of using the law to minimize harm, but not to make it some sort of conduit for our freedom possibilities. State bodies is not going to be the reflection through which we see ourselves. Trans people are that reflection, and it's really crucial that we persist having that discussion alongside conversations about resisting these policies and approaches.
