As Beachgoers Ran From Attack, Viral Picture Depicts Rescuer Dashing ‘All Out’ Towards the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, views the iconic coast as her back yard. On that particular Sunday evening, she, similar to other neighbors, heard pops reverberating across the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was too light and there was nothing visible,” she explains. Stepping out of her home, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore signaled a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the road, talking to a couple who had rushed up the slope soaked, she became aware of someone approaching at her rear. It was a lifeguard, sprinting to Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. It was just him running in the opposite way that everyone was trying to escape from, and hauling that sizeable pack and without footwear … He’s running at something that surely every instinct would tell you to go in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully full throttle sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism During Crisis

The image that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many instances of valour in the aftermath of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, officers and paramedics caring for dozens of the injured.

Community Response and Solidarity

Doolan’s actions was a single example among several to be shared by the local area, with the patrol base beside the site of the violence becoming a makeshift medical station. Accounts show that other team members were also seen responding bravely, for instance entering the surf to rescue people in distress.

Following the events, statements of appreciation were shared. One post shared appreciation for the lifeguards who exhibited that “goodness will always triumph over evil”.

The team of lifeguards later shared a message, saying they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful messages and support. We are overwhelmed by the kindness directed at our personnel,” the group wrote. “In time, we will share our stories in the aim that it supports those impacted.”

Council Praise

Waverley council, the local authority that hires many full-time lifeguards, stated that the crew rose to the occasion from the second the shooting began right into late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many moving accounts, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” commented a council representative.
